  • Kidney transplant

A kidney transplant is a surgery done to replace a diseased kidney with a healthy kidney from a donor. The kidney may come from a deceased organ donor or from a living donor. Family members or others who are a good match may be able to donate one of their kidneys. This type of transplant is called a living transplant. People who donate a kidney can live healthy lives with one healthy kidney.

A person getting a transplant most often gets just 1 kidney. In rare situations, he or she may get 2 kidneys from a deceased donor. The diseased kidneys are usually left in place. The transplanted kidney is placed in the lower abdomen on the front side of the body.

Why might I need a kidney transplant?

You may need a kidney transplant if you have end stage renal disease (ESRD). This is a permanent condition of kidney failure. It often requires dialysis. This is a process used to remove wastes and other substances from the blood.

    The kidneys:

    • Remove urea and liquid waste from the blood in the form of urine. Urea is made when foods containing protein, such as meat, poultry, and certain vegetables, are broken down in the body. Urea is carried in the blood to the kidneys.
    • Balance salts, electrolytes such as potassium and sodium and other substances in the blood
    • Produce erythropoietin, a hormone that aids the formation of red blood cells
    • Regulate blood pressure
    • Regulate fluid and acid-base balance in the body to keep it neutral. This is needed for normal function of many processes within the body

What are the risks for kidney transplant?

As with any surgery, complications can occur. Some complications may include:

    • Bleeding
    • Infection
    • Blockage of the blood vessels to the new kidney
    • Leakage of urine or blockage of urine in the ureter
    • Lack of function of the new kidney at first

THE PURPOSE AND PROCESS OF AN BREAST IMPLANTS

Breast augmentation, or the more colloquial boob job, is not simply about achieving bigger breasts; it can enhance the breast contour as well as size, and may give your body a more harmonious balance by making it more proportional.

A boob job involves the insertion of implants, which are often used to make normal breasts larger for cosmetic purposes. Sometimes a woman having a reconstruction after a mastectomy will need breast enlargement performed on the opposite breast for greater symmetry. An inequality in size due to trauma or congenital deformity may also be corrected with an enlargement procedure.

Women undergo augmentation surgeries after they have lost significant amounts of weight, have recently been pregnant, or simply because they wish to modify their physical appearance for their own personal reasons. Your Somnio coordinator will be able to explain in depth the process having real life experience in this procedure.

  • Hair loss Treatment

With the growing acceptance of "medical tourism", people who need hair transplant, hair loss treatment and restoration are considering treatment abroad as a low cost option. Prices for hair transplant, hair loss treatment and restoration abroad are highly competitive.

Bear in mind that you will need to find out about the standards and regulations in the country where you will be treated before you agree to surgery abroad.

Like good health and youth, most of us take our locks for granted -- that is, until they're gone. For many people, a hair transplant can help bring back what looks like a full -- or at least a fuller -- head of hair.

If thinning up top or going bald really bothers you, the procedure can be one way to feel more confident about your looks. But first talk with your doctor about what you can expect during and after the surgery.

    What Is a Hair Transplant?

It's a type of surgery that moves hair you already have to fill an area with thin or no hair. Doctors have been doing these transplants in the U.S. since the 1950s, but techniques have changed a lot in recent years.

You usually have the procedure in the doctor's office. First, the surgeon cleans your scalp and injects medicine to numb the back of your head. Your doctor will choose one of two methods for the transplant: follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS) or follicular unit extraction (FUE).

With FUSS, the surgeon removes a 6- to 10-inch strip of skin from the back of your head. He sets it aside and sews the scalp closed. This area is immediately hidden by the hair around it.

Next, the surgeon's team divides the strip of removed scalp into 500 to 2,000 tiny grafts, each with an individual hair or just a few hairs. The number and type of graft you get depends on your hair type, quality, color, and the size of the area where you're getting the transplant.

If you're getting the FUE procedure, the surgeon's team will shave the back of your scalp. Then, the doctor will remove hair follicles one by one from there. The area heals with small dots, which your existing hair will cover.

After that point, both procedures are the same. After he prepares the grafts, the surgeon cleans and numbs the area where the hair will go, creates holes or slits with a scalpel or needle, and delicately places each graft in one of the holes. He'll probably get help from other team members to plant the grafts, too.

Depending on the size of the transplant you're getting, the process will take about 4 to 8 hours. You might need another procedure later on if you continue to lose hair or decide you want thicker hair.

  • Liver Transplant

A liver transplant is an operation that replaces a patient's diseased liver with a whole or partial healthy liver from another person. This article explains the current indications for liver transplantation, types of donor livers, the operation itself, and the immunosuppression that is required after transplantation.

In 2017, UCSF's liver transplant program earned the highest score for risk adjusted outcomes based on data from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) using SRTR's new "5-Tier Outcome Assessment" model. Among those institutions receiving the highest ranking nationally, UCSF ranked first in the number of adult liver transplants performed.

    Liver Anatomy and Function

The liver is a vital organ, meaning that one cannot live without it. The liver serves many critical functions including metabolism of drugs and toxins, removing degradation products of normal body metabolism (for example clearance of ammonia and bilirubin from the blood), and synthesis of many important proteins and enzymes (such as factors necessary for blood to clot).

    Who Needs a Liver transplant?

Liver transplantation surgically replaces a failing or diseased liver with one that is normal and healthy. At this time, transplantation is the only cure for liver insufficiency or liver failure because no device or machine reliably performs all of the functions of the liver. People who require liver transplants typically have one of the following conditions.

    Acute Liver Failure

Acute liver failure, also known as fulminant hepatic failure, occurs when a previously healthy liver suffers massive injury resulting in clinical signs and symptoms of liver insufficiency. Any number of things can lead to acute liver failure but the most common causes are acetaminophen overdose, viral infections (known or yet unknown virus), ingestion of a toxin such as poisonous mushrooms, or an idiosyncratic drug reaction.

The hallmark of this condition is the development of confusion (encephalopathy) within eight weeks after the onset of yellowing of the skin (jaundice). Confusion occurs because toxins typically metabolized by the liver accumulate. Unlike patients with chronic liver disease, who can survive weeks to months to years while awaiting liver transplantation, patients with acute liver failure may die within days if not transplanted. These patients are listed at highest priority (Status I), placing them at the top of local, regional and national waiting lists for a donor liver.

    Chronic liver failure

The liver has a remarkable ability to repair itself in response to injury. Nevertheless, repeated injury and repair, typically over many years and even decades, scars the liver permanently. The end stage of scarring is termed cirrhosis and corresponds to the point where the liver can no longer repair itself. Once a person has cirrhosis, he or she may begin to show signs of inadequate liver function. This is termed "decompensated liver disease." Although medications can decrease the symptoms caused by the liver failure, liver transplantation represents the only permanent cure.

  • Hymen reconstruction surgery

A hymenoplasty is a surgical procedure in which a woman's hymen is reconstructed. The hymen is a thin membrane that partially blocks the vaginal entrance. An intact hymen is associated with virginity, since if it is intact when a women first has intercourse, it will tear and sometimes bleed. However, the hymen can be torn under other circumstances, including exercise, tampon use, and horseback riding.

During a hymenoplasty, the remnants of the hymen are treated by removing the top layer of tissue, then are sewn together. Because the top skin layer has been removed, the treated edges adhere to each other during healing, creating a fully restored hymen.

After the restoration, sexual intercourse will tear the reconstructed tissue, causing pain and possible bleeding, but healing will occur just as with a natural hymen.

Who is a candidate for hymenoplasty?

Hymenoplasties are most often performed for religious, societal or cultural regions. In some cultures, women can actually find their lives in danger if they are found not to have an intact hymen on their wedding night, regardless of how the hymen was initially ruptured. For these women, a hymenoplasty is more than a simple cosmetic procedure.

Other women consider hymenoplasty because their first sexual experience was unpleasant, or occurred against their will. If a woman's first sexual experience was forced, a hymenoplasty can give her back a choice that was taken from her. Some women undergo the procedure because they want to experience a "first time" with a long-term partner. However, most cosmetic surgeons will not perform a hymenoplasty for a women who has already given birth.

    The Procedure

You should expect some swelling and discomfort following the procedure. Following discharge from hospital you will be taken back home if you live locally, or your hotel to begin your recovery period. You will have sutures that may need to be removed if they are not dissolvable. Your surgeon will advise you about this also. Most patients notice a significant improvement in the bruising and swelling after the first two weeks but it can take some time for everything to settle completely. You will want to book about 1 to 2 weeks off work.

How long is the recovery time?

The surgical procedure for a hymenoplasty is relatively simple. It can be performed under local anesthetic with no hospitalization, and you can return to most of your regular activities the next day. Your doctor uses dissolvable stitches in the reconstruction process, and the risk of infection or fever is minimal. The recovery time, however, is six to eight weeks, during which time you cannot engage in sexual activity, exercise rigorously, or use a tampon or a douche in order to avoid disrupting the healing process.

  • Cardiac / Heart surgery abroad

Have you considered going overseas for heart surgery such as coronary angioplasty, heart bypass surgery or heart valve replacement?

Hospitals in countries such as India, have excellent medical and surgical facilities and offer an attractive alternative which you may wish to consider if you are looking for heart surgery abroad.

Heart surgery treats complications of ischemic heart disease (for example, coronary artery bypass grafting), correct congenital heart disease, or treat valvular heart disease created by various causes including endocarditis.

    When is open-heart surgery needed?

Open-heart surgery may be done to perform a CABG. A coronary artery bypass graft may be necessary for people with coronary heart disease.

Coronary heart disease occurs when the blood vessels that provide blood and oxygen for the heart muscle become narrow and hard. This is often called "hardening of the arteries."

Hardening occurs when fatty material forms a plaque on the walls of the coronary arteries. This plaque narrows the arteries, making it difficult for blood to get through. When blood can't flow properly to the heart, a heart attack may occur.

Open-heart surgery is also done to:

    • repair or replace heart valves, which allow blood to travel through the heart
    • repair damaged or abnormal areas of the heart
    • implant medical devices that help the heart beat properly
    • replace a damaged heart with a donated heart (heart transplantation)

    How is open-heart surgery performed?

According to the National Institutes of Health, a CABG takes from four to six hours. It is generally done following these basic steps:

    • The patient is given general anesthesia. This ensures that the patient will be asleep and pain free through the whole surgery.
    • The surgeon makes an 8- to 10-inch cut in the chest.
    • The surgeon cuts through all or part of the patient's breastbone to expose the heart.
    • Once the heart is visible, the patient may be connected to a heart-lung bypass machine. The machine moves blood away from the heart so that the surgeon can operate. Some newer procedures do not use this machine.
  • Cosmetic Surgery, Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery is something which many people are choosing in combination with a relaxing holiday. Not only does this mean you can enjoy a stress-free experience, but you'll also find that considerable savings can be made when you choose plastic surgery abroad.

There are a huge number of different cosmetic procedures that you can choose from; covering just about any surgery you can think of. Some of the most popular include.

    • Breast augmentation
    • Facelifts
    • Nose reshaping

    Breast enlargement

There are many ways to perform breast enlargements. The method must be tailored to the individual patient needs. The principal is to create a pocket under the breast tissue and place a breast implant into that pocket. The breast enlargement operation is done under either local anesthetic (you are awake) or general anesthetic (you are asleep).

    Facelift abroad

The facelift is an extremely popular tried and tested procedure which 'winds the clock back' by reversing the effects of gravity - refreshing the face, improving the contour of the neck, removing the heavy, tired look and revitalising the face. In both men and women the incision used in face lift surgery is the same; starting high in the temple area (hidden by the hair at this point) the incision travels down in front of the ear, round the earlobe and up behind the ear before curving gently back into the hair at the neck; occasionally it is necessary to add an incision under the chin. Using these incisions the skin and deep tissues are remodelled and re-draped and the incisions are then closed. The surgeon usually then applies a head bandage in order to pressurise (gently) the incisions during the post operative night.

    Nose reshaping

The nose reshaping operation is carried out under general anaesthesia by a rhinoplasty surgeon and is carried out inside the nostrils so that there are no external scars; unless you decide to have the size or the nostrils reduced, in which case small scars around the sides of the nostrils, placed in the natural crease lines between nose and cheek, will be present. Rhinoplasty is one of the most sought after cosmetic procedures amongst men and women and the vast majority of patients undergoing rhinoplasty surgery gain a feeling of increased self confidence with improvement in their body image.

  • Dental Implants

Private dentistry costs can prove to be prohibitively expensive in the United Kingdom, which means that many UK patients are considering having their dental treatment abroad. If you choose to use a dentist abroad, you'll find that significant savings can be made.

There are many different treatments available abroad, including dental implants, crowns, bridges and veneers.

You can make significant savings on the costs of both restorative and cosmetic dental treatment when you travel to Europe. Our site will help you find out more information about procedures, destinations and clinics and we can even help you to get quotes for your dentistry abroad.

    Dental treatment

With access to affordable NHS dentistry becoming increasingly difficult and the costs of private dentistry becoming prohibitively expensive, a significant number of people in the UK are now seeking dental treatment abroad.

Modern, high quality treatment is available worldwide at prices significantly lower than at home, and many people choose to combine their dental treatment with a relaxing holiday. Popular procedures include cosmetic and restorative dental techniques such as implants, crowns and bridges, veneers, composites and ceramic inlays/onlays, teeth whitening and orthodontic braces.

    Bridges

A bridge is a fixed replacement for a missing tooth or teeth. It's made by taking an impression of the surrounding teeth, which will eventually support the bridge. A bridge is usually created from precious metal and porcelain and will be fixed in your mouth (unlike dentures, which can be removed).

    Fillings

Fillings are used to repair a hole in a tooth caused by decay. The most common type of filling is an amalgam, made from a mixture of metals including mercury, silver, tin, copper and zinc. Your dentist will offer the most appropriate type of filling according to your clinical needs. This includes white fillings, if appropriate.

  • Cancer Treatment

Cancer can be one of the most dramatic and life threatening diseases today with over 200 different types and many serious decisions for patients to make, especially when considering travelling abroad for treatment. There are a variety of treatment types available for cancer; most patients may want to consider looking for quality rather than cheaper treatments.

Research beforehand is essential for such a serious disease. Patients must consider travel insurance, flight times, the time required to stay in a certain country for treatment and patients may also benefit from researching specialist countries for their selected treatment. Patients should try and gather all the important information they can from their provider as well as ensuring their chosen provider is reputable. There are many centres in the UK that are linked with clinics abroad for an easier consultation and planning process, or patients can ask their doctor for information.

Doctors in the UK have admitted that some private clinics abroad do have better clinics and some do contain more up to date technology for treatment. The recovery will depend entirely on the clinic and treatment, the advancement of the disease and how early it has been detected.

For treatment abroad most doctors will recommend finding a provider in all specialise in cancer treatment and are also relatively close to the UK for shorter flights as time is a main concern when dealing with cancer. Flights to destinations such as India which still have the facilities and qualified doctors will take longer and also cost more.

Common treatments for cancer are radiotherapy and chemotherapy although some treatments may include surgery. Alternative treatments, such as the use of medication, are also available. Prostate cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, bowel cancer, throat cancer, mouth cancer and lip cancer are all treatable abroad.

    Treating Cancer Abroad

Being unaware of modern cancer treatment methods results in the patient deciding for traditional options such as surgery or simple variants of radiotherapy. However, medical science never slows down in pace and does not stop developing new methods and technologies to fight cancer.

    Chemotherapy

Though conventional and widespread, not everyone is informed about the possibilities and functions of this cancer treatment method. When it comes to cancer, chemotherapy is multifunctional in its application. It can be used both independently instead of surgery as well as after surgery to kill the rest of the cancer cells or it can be also mixed with other cancer treatments. In addition to normal chemotherapy infusions, there are a number of other ways to conduct this procedure including chemotherapy pills, creams (normally used to treat skin cancer) and also chemotherapy pads that are applied near the tumor during operation. Some chemotherapy drugs are injected directly in the abdomen or in the chest cavity of the person. Also, the newest methods of chemotherapy use light particles. This method manages to target damaged cells without any chance of their survival while not affecting the health ones. This results in avoiding strong side effects and thus provides much less damaging to the patient. After chemotherapy has been conducted, the patient has to come in for regular check-ups and scans in order to measure the cancer treatments progress, and in case of low success, to adjust the treatment.

  • IVF Treatment

I nfertility means the inability to naturally conceive a child and couples are generally considered to have fertility problems if they don't fall pregnant after one year of trying. Assisted Reproductive Technology, otherwise known as ART refers not only to IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) but also to other procedures which are usually combined with fertility drugs to increase success rates.

In Vitro Fertilisation literally means 'fertilisation in glass', and in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) is one of the techniques used to help couples have a baby. IVF involves stimulating a woman's ovaries to produce lots of follicles and eggs then surgically removing an egg from her ovaries and fertilising it with sperm in a dish in a laboratory. The fertilised egg, or embryo, is then placed back into the woman's uterus for a normal pregnancy to follow.
